Overview

The Practice Development Specialist (PDS) will serve as a trusted advisor to the Sr. Practice Development Manager (SPDM) and other practice development team members in support of the Practice Group Leaders (PGLs), Specialty Group Leaders (SGLs) and partners in the Strategic Transactions Group (STG). 

The PDS, in coordination with the SPDM, will act as an advisor and liaison on behalf of their practice group with other practices, attorneys and business support departments at the firm.

The PDS will work directly with the SPDM to support the implementation of the overall strategy, may work with partners to drive pieces of the strategy, and ensure the operational efficiency within the assigned practice group. In this role, the PDS will report to the SPDM and work closely with other departments (e.g., Business Development, Finance, Marketing, Knowledge Management, Attorney Development, etc.) to support elements of the practice’s strategic vision, business operations, financial profitability, resource management, and goals of the practice group.

The ideal candidate will have experience working in a large law firm or other professional services environment; exceptional project management abilities; strong organizational and communication (both verbal and written) skills and attention to detail; innate bias to take initiative; can-do attitude; demonstrated ability to use technology, database, presentation, spreadsheet, document management and other software applications.

Responsibilities

  1. Work alongside SPDM and practice group leadership to support development and implementation of strategic group plan. Manage select work streams and initiatives in support of the strategy and practice priorities.
  2. Support daily operations of the assigned practice group, including the preparation and design of (and in certain cases, managing) PG substantive meetings that maintain focus on PG priorities.
  3. Identify opportunities for improvement, innovation, and efficiency in business operations, matter management, infrastructure and methodologies. Work with PDM to develop solutions and plans for corresponding actions.
  4. Assist SPDM, SGLs and PGLs with the onboarding and integration of lateral partners and counsel into the practice groups, including preparation and execution of integration plans and tracking onboarding progress.
  5. Working with the Public Relations, Communications and Events teams, support planning of external marketing opportunities that raise the profile of the practice and partners, including identification of speaking opportunities, conferences, sponsorships, and writing opportunities to enhance knowledge marketing efforts.
  6. Coordinate and prepare legal ranking submissions in collaboration with the Public Relations/ Marketing Communications team; work with PDM and PGLs to determine rankings strategy for each submission, draft and finalize submissions accordingly.
  7. In coordination with SPDM, collaborate with Finance colleagues to analyze practice group performance metrics and identify actionable themes that support the growth and goals of the practice. Support preparation and tracking of practice group budgets.
  8. Monitor trends and market developments relevant to capital markets and M&A; share relevant developments with key stakeholders.
  9. Act as a mentor to junior team members (coordinators and analysts).

Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree with a minimum of three years of relevant experience in a law firm, professional services firm or other corporate environment.
  • Goal-oriented with a positive, can-do attitude and a collaborative working style.
  • Excellent oral communication and business writing skills, and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish credibility with Ropes & Gray partners and bring to bear the right mix of confidence, tact and persistence in working with the firm’s lawyers and professional staff in a multi-office environment.
  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills, including ability to develop project plans and set deadlines to meet business objectives, manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to anticipate, identify and solve problems, work independently, take initiative and make decisions using sound judgment.
  • Ability to compile, review, analyze and determine logical conclusions or recommendations based on data and information that is varied in context, content and format.
  • Ability to contribute to the training and supervision of entry level team members.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively use technology, database, presentation, spreadsheet, document management and other software applications

The anticipated pay range for this role is listed below and represents our good faith and reasonable estimate of the starting salary range at the time of posting. In addition, this role is eligible for a discretionary bonus based on performance. The actual offered rate for this position will be determined based on job-related, non-discriminatory factors, including qualifications and experience, geographic location, education, external market data and consideration of internal equity.

 

Boston: $69,000 - $103,000

New York: $72,500 - $108,000

 

Working Conditions

This position requires hybrid on-site presence as an essential function of the role. Consistent and predictable on-site presence is required for ongoing business continuity, professional development and effective collaboration with colleagues and management.
