Overview

The Awards and Rankings Manager will have primary responsibility for leading the firm’s awards and rankings programs and strategy, as well as managing the firm’s response to external surveys. Reporting to the Director of Public Relations and Communications, the Awards and Rankings Manager will project manage the firm’s recognition program and advise on recognition strategy. This includes advising Marketing, Business Development, Practice Development teams, and Attorney Talent team, as well as firm leadership, on which awards, rankings, surveys and directories to focus on, including how to garner higher rankings and increased recognition to elevate the firm’s external visibility.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the firm’s participation in key legal directories, surveys and award rankings.
  • Project manages the planning, drafting and submission of rankings, surveys and awards. Shares deadlines, communicates expectations, reviews final copies, and enters submissions.
  • Identify rankings, awards and surveys opportunities and pairing those opportunities with firm successes and significant attorney, practice and firm accomplishments.
  • Collaborate with marketing, business development, practice development, practice group leaders and the PR team to gather, approve, maintain, and update highlights for submissions.
  • Manages the firm’s response to surveys, working closely with HRIS, HR, Diversity and other departments to provide consistent, appropriate, completed surveys.
  • Updates and manages a comprehensive calendar of ranking publications, directories, surveys and awards due dates and requirements.
  • Identifies new rankings, awards and surveys opportunities through a continual and proactive survey of the rankings landscape.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with editors, writers, researchers and publishers of rankings, surveys and directories to serve as an effective liaison and advocate for the firm.
  • Maintains a system for alerting attorneys and support team members to pending submission deadlines.
  • Writes and reviews high-priority submissions for the firm with input from marketing, communications and business development colleagues.
  • Creates, updates and maintains tip sheets to help stakeholders create compelling, accurate and consistent submissions and build strong cases for improved rankings.
  • Uses the submissions to highlight the firm's practices, strengths, developments, and client accomplishments, while making sure the submissions are aligned with the business strategies of the practices—and importantly, strictly follow client preferences and ethical considerations.
  • Advises, guides and prepares attorneys on rankings interviews and strategy.
  • Manages the interview process for attorneys with the various directories and handling the logistics of those interviews. Prepares briefing papers and talking points for those interviews.
  • With support from the firm’s PR and business development team, maintains a comprehensive and up-to-date database of firm, practice and attorney awards.
  • Maintains a comprehensive and up-to-date database of completed surveys.
  • Prepares a thoughtful analyses of rankings results to identify ways in which rankings results and commentary can be utilized for other marketing and PR purposes.
  • Promotes rankings results on the internal and external websites and for use in other marketing collateral.
  • Advises marketing, communications and business development colleagues on rankings gleaned from a careful and strategic analysis of results and research feedback.
  • Works with the Director of Communications and Media Relations to identify and implement best practices to improve rankings.

 

Essential Capabilities:

  • A self-starter and strong project manager who understands the details within a much larger content.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a team as well as independently; must be able to share information, goals, opportunities, successes and failures with the appropriate parties.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely in writing and orally with all levels of attorneys and staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with 6-10 years PR or marketing experience
  • Expertise in Chambers, Legal 500, and similar directory rankings
  • Experience working at a law firm or for a legal rankings company is preferred.
  • The ideal candidate will have 6-10 years of experience in project management, communications strategy, organizational skills, leading initiatives, and the ability to work closely and comfortably with sophisticated professional-service providers.
  • Ability to prepare highly detailed, error-free work product.
  • Strong, effective, and creative communicator, both written and oral.
  • Excellent organization and project management skills required.
  • Proven track record in leading projects and initiatives—as well as executing those projects.
  • Proven track record working with colleagues and counterparts within an organization, as well as with executives, editors, writers, and researchers at publications.
  • Effective in providing seamless client service to internal stakeholders.
  • Embraces work in a high-demand, fast-paced environment.
  • Reliable, dependable and ability to respond to requests quickly.
  • Strong knowledge of competitive intelligence and up-to-speed on peer firm rankings
  • Intellectual curiosity about the law.
  • Advanced proficiency with PowerPoint, Microsoft Word, Excel and other commonly used business software.
  • Creative thinking about marketing and public relations tactics.

Compensation and Total Rewards Package

Ropes & Gray is proud to offer a comprehensive Total Rewards package to our business support team members. The anticipated pay range for this role is listed below and represents our good faith and reasonable estimate of the starting salary range at the time of posting. In addition, this role is eligible for a discretionary bonus based on performance. The actual offered rate for this position will be determined based on job-related, non-discriminatory factors, including qualifications and experience, geographic location, education, external market data and consideration of internal equity.

 

Boston: $117,000 - $175,000

Chicago: $117,000 - $175,000

New York: $122,500 - $184,000

Washington, DC: $117,000 - $175,000

 

Working Conditions

This position requires hybrid on-site presence as an essential function of the role. Consistent and predictable on-site presence is required for ongoing business continuity, professional development and effective collaboration with colleagues and management.
