Overview

The Client Operations & LPM (“Client Ops”) team resides at the intersection of legal operations, process improvement, technology, data storytelling, client service and legal project management.  The team strengthens Ropes & Gray's client relationships and optimizes the delivery of legal services by developing innovative tools and processes that drive efficiency and meet our partners’ and clients' evolving priorities.

 

The Client Ops team has put in place a specialized infrastructure team.  Its mission is to ensure that the Client Ops team has a reliable technology infrastructure and innovative tools at its disposal.

 

The Manager of Client Operations & LPM Infrastructure is responsible for managing the technology infrastructure to support this mission and drives high-priority cross-departmental projects (including with the Firm’s Business Intelligence, Knowledge Management, Information Services and Legal Technology teams) that advance the Client Ops team’s objectives.  

 

The Manager will be the direct supervisor of two direct reports and outside consultants.

Responsibilities

  1. Be the go-to expert for the team on Client Ops team’s infrastructure portfolio (including the MicroStrategy and Profisee platforms) and Firm technology resources used in the ordinary course by the Client Ops team.
  2. Manages the Client Ops team infrastructure project pipeline, prioritizing high value client and practice tools.
  3. Applies strong project management experience in delivery of services including:
    • Report development for client relationship and individual matter management
    • Transition from static reporting to use of dashboards
    • Creation of tools to support practice group matter management
    • Automation and other initiatives to continuously improve team efficiency.
  4. Translates business ideas brought by Client Ops team members into creative, well thought out technical solutions that advance team efficiency, automate tasks and offer self-service solutions for lawyers.
  5. Fluent in Client Ops team and Firm financial metrics and data. Advises Client Ops team members on accurate application of metrics in reporting and analyses. 
  6. Owns training program for new or promoted team members on Client Ops infrastructure topics.
  7. Invests in learning about the work of the Client Ops team and regularly seeks feedback on infrastructure portfolio. Understands the trends and issues shaping the business of the Client Ops team and driving tool development.
  8. Engages with peers in other Firm technology areas to advocate for Client Ops team infrastructure projects; ensures that infrastructure team is complying with Firm best practices and aligns with the Firm’s policies and processes (including data governance and cybersecurity).
  9. Responsibilities may include ad hoc projects, including new technology assessments, requirements drafting and testing systems.

  • Able to maintain strict confidentiality of the firm's internal and personnel affairs and client information. Understands ethics of position including ethical rules with regards to confidentiality, billing and client representation and advocacy.
  • Collaborates effectively and professionally with all levels of the organization, including attorneys, coworkers and administrators. Possesses strong oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate with Client Ops team colleagues, staff and lawyers.  Able to manage and lead projects.
  • Able to influence all levels of the organization. Can effectively convey solutions to complex problems.  Able to communicate complex technical concepts to a non-technical audience including, but not limited to, the Client Ops team.
  • Must be a proactive self-starter who understands the details and can integrate them into a much larger context. Must deliver high quality work and have the ability to follow up and follow through.
  • Must be flexible in order to respond quickly and positively to shifting demands and opportunities. Able to work under tight deadlines, handle multiple, detailed tasks simultaneously, prioritize appropriately and delegate to available resources.
  • Must be able to anticipate issues and exercise independent judgment to make sound, justifiable decisions while knowing when and to whom to escalate issues.
  • Strong record of Excel and database management expertise. Experience and facility with reporting/analytic/dashboard platforms (e.g., Tableau, PowerBI, MicroStrategy) required.
  • Willing to obtain certification in MicroStrategy (paid for by R&G) as part of onboarding and orientation process.
  • Able to work effectively in a multi-office and culturally and educationally diverse environment.
  • Must be team-oriented and able to share information, goals, opportunities, successes and failures with the appropriate parties.
  • Must be flexible and available for travel.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree from a top-ranked institution with a major or significant coursework in computer or data science and ten or more years of professional services experience is required. 
  • A strong project management orientation is critical. 
  • The position requires highly-developed organization, writing, analytical, presentation and communication skills.

Compensation and Total Rewards Package

The anticipated pay range for this role is listed below and represents our good faith and reasonable estimate of the starting salary range at the time of posting. In addition, this role is eligible for a discretionary bonus based on performance. The actual offered rate for this position will be determined based on job-related, non-discriminatory factors, including qualifications and experience, geographic location, education, external market data and consideration of internal equity.

 

Boston: $123,200 - $187,950

New York: $129,100 - $196,900

 

Working Conditions

This position requires hybrid on-site presence as an essential function of the role. Consistent and predictable on-site presence is required for ongoing business continuity, professional development and effective collaboration with colleagues and management.
