Overview

The Practice Development Specialist (PDS) will serve as a trusted advisor to the Practice Development Manager (PDM), Practice Development Director, and other practice development team members in support of the Practice Group Leaders (PGLs), Specialty Group Leaders (SGLs) and partners in the Asset Management group.


PDSes, in coordination with the PDMs, are also advisors and liaisons on behalf of their practice group with other practices, attorneys and business support departments at the firm.


The PDS will work directly with the PDM to support the implementation of the overall strategy, may work with partners to drive pieces of the strategy, and support the operational efficiency within Asset Management. In this role, the PDS will report to the Practice Development Manager and work closely with other departments (e.g., Business Development, Marketing, Knowledge Management, Attorney Development, etc.) to support elements of the practice’s strategic vision, business operations, financial profitability, resource management, and plans.


The ideal candidate will have experience working in a large law firm or other professional services environment; exceptional project management skills; strong organizational and communication (both verbal and written) skills and attention to detail; innate bias to take initiative; can-do attitude; demonstrated ability to use technology, database, presentation, spreadsheet, document management and other software applications.

Responsibilities

  1. Provide support to PDM and specialty group leadership on development and implementation of strategic group plan. Manage select work streams and initiatives in support of the strategy.
  2. Support PDM, specialty group leadership and partners with the daily operations of the Registered Funds specialty group and Asset Management, including assisting with the preparation and design of (and in certain cases, running) substantive meetings that are accretive to the strategic practice group plan.
  3. Identify opportunities for improvement, innovation, and efficiency in business operations, matter management, infrastructure, methodologies, and work with PDM to develop solutions and plans for corresponding action.
  4. Assist PDM, SGLs and PGLs with the onboarding and integration of lateral partners and counsel into the practice groups, including helping prepare and execute integration plans and track progress.
  5. Coordinate and prepare legal ranking submissions, including working with PDM and SGLs to determine rankings strategy for each submission, drafting and finalizing submissions accordingly.
  6. Assist and at times take the lead in drafting specialty group presentations working with PDM, partners and SGLs.
  7. In coordination with PDM, collaborate with Finance colleagues to analyze specialty group performance metrics. Support preparation and tracking of practice group budgets.
  8. Monitor trends and market developments relevant to Asset Management; share relevant developments with key stakeholders.
  9. Assist PDM in supervising and developing the team’s Practice Development Coordinator.

Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree with a minimum of three years of relevant experience in a law firm, professional services firm or other corporate environment.
  • Goal-oriented with a positive, can-do attitude and a collaborative working style.
  • Excellent oral communication and business writing skills, and attention to detail.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish credibility with Ropes & Gray partners and bring to bear the right mix of confidence, tact and persistence in working with the firm’s lawyers and professional staff in a multi-office environment.
  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills, including ability to develop project plans and set deadlines to meet business objectives, manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to anticipate, identify and solve problems, work independently, take initiative and make decisions using sound judgment.
  • Ability to compile, review, analyze and determine logical conclusions or recommendations based on data and information that is varied in context, content and format.
  • Ability to contribute to the training and supervision of entry level team members.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively use technology, database, presentation, spreadsheet, document management and other software applications.

The anticipated pay range for this role is listed below and represents our good faith and reasonable estimate of the starting salary range at the time of posting. In addition, this role is eligible for a discretionary bonus based on performance. The actual offered rate for this position will be determined based on job-related, non-discriminatory factors, including qualifications and experience, geographic location, education, external market data and consideration of internal equity.

 

Boston: $70,500 - $107,550

Working Conditions

This position requires hybrid on-site presence as an essential function of the role. Consistent and predictable on-site presence is required for ongoing business continuity, professional development and effective collaboration with colleagues and management.
