Overview

The Engagement Terms Analyst supports the firm’s critical risk management function by performing various duties related to the execution, recording, and periodic evaluation of engagement terms and outside counsel guidelines with firm clients.  

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Works with management and attorneys in the firm’s conflicts department to maintain and develop one or more databases designed to record the execution status of firm engagement terms, including outside counsel guidelines, as well as various substantive provisions of those terms.
  2. Conducts systematic and targeted reviews of engagement terms and outside counsel guidelines in support of various risk management initiatives.
  3. Produces ad hoc and periodic reports relating to the foregoing for management and attorneys in the firm’s conflicts department and the Office of the General Counsel.
  4. Follows up with firm attorneys and, as requested, clients, to ensure that engagement terms, including outside counsel guidelines, are executed, and escalates related inquiries to the Office of the General Counsel.
  5. Participates, as appropriate and in coordination with attorneys in the firm’s conflicts department, in the negotiation and documentation of engagement terms and outside counsel guidelines with firm clients.
  6. Participates, as appropriate and in coordination with attorneys in the firm’s conflicts department, in the review and summarization of outside counsel guidelines for various internal stakeholders.
  7. Participates, as appropriate and in coordination with the firm’s Conflicts Product Manager and the Senior Manager of the conflicts department, in the development and implementation of technology initiatives related to outside counsel guidelines.
  8. Performs projects relating to the foregoing and to the firm’s compliance with substantive requirements of engagement letters and outside counsel guidelines.
  9. Performs other work-related duties and projects, as assigned.

ESSENTIAL CAPABILITIES:

  • Must demonstrate the ability to maintain strict confidentiality of the firm’s clients and the firm’s internal and personnel affairs.
  • Must be extremely organized and possess excellent attention to detail in the management of firm data and written communication.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to identify and interpret provisions of routine commercial contracts, preferably law firm engagement letters.
  • Must willingly accept and proactively perform delegated assignments in a cooperative manner, subject to management supervision.
  • Able to interact effectively with colleagues at the firm, including attorneys and support staff.
  • Able to be a proactive self-starter who understands the details within a much larger context.
  • Must be flexible in order to respond quickly and positively to shifting demands and opportunities; able to work under tight deadlines and handle multiple, detailed tasks.
  • Must have strong data management skills.
  • Must have strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook and, preferably, database software, and a demonstrable ability to learn any department specific software.
  • Must be team-oriented and able to share information, goals, opportunities, successes and failures with the appropriate parties.
  • Must pay strict attention to details and have the ability to follow up and follow through.

Qualifications

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • College degree and two+ years of experience in a conflict of interest or other department of a large law firm strongly preferred.
  • JD preferred.
  • Database research experience (such as Lexis, Elite, 3E, Evaluate, LegalKey and Excel) strongly preferred.
  • Must possess strong PC and data entry skills, analystical and problem-solving skills, verbal and written communication skills, and service orientation.

The anticipated pay range for this role is listed below and represents our good faith and reasonable estimate of the starting salary range at the time of posting. In addition, this role is eligible for a discretionary bonus based on performance. The actual offered rate for this position will be determined based on job-related, non-discriminatory factors, including qualifications and experience, geographic location, education, external market data and consideration of internal equity.

 

Boston: $70,500 - $107,550 

New York: $73,900 - $112,650 

Working Conditions

This position requires hybrid on-site presence as an essential function of the role. Consistent and predictable on-site presence is required for ongoing business continuity, professional development and effective collaboration with colleagues and management.
