Overview

The Tax Accountant I is a key member of the Tax, Treasury, Risk, and RGIP (Ropes & Gray’s Investment Pool) team. This role is responsible for supporting the preparation of U.S. and international income tax return schedules, ensuring tax compliance, developing and maintaining tax procedures, contributing to audit and debt compliance, and performing ad hoc financial analyses. The position offers broad exposure to accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls, supporting the firm’s global tax strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and compile tax schedules for U.S. federal, state, international, and local government tax returns, including income, business, sales/use, and property taxes.
  • Serve as a liaison with external tax advisors, providing necessary information for the preparation of partnership tax returns.
  • Collaborate with the Tax Supervisor to meet departmental objectives and align procedures with firm goals and global tax strategy.
  • Manage cash operations, including monthly bank reconciliations, partner capital calls and distributions, and tracking investment funding/redemptions.
  • Prepare timely and accurate financial statements and analyses for partner distribution.
  • Support partners and their personal tax accountants throughout the year, addressing questions related to K-1s and other tax matters.
  • Assist in coordinating and supporting audits as needed.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all financial and systems-related information.
  • Stay current on industry trends, developments, and technologies impacting the department; research global tax issues using CCH, BNA, and Lexis.
  • Participate in departmental project teams and task forces to streamline workflows and resolve issues; assist with various firm and departmental initiatives as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
  • Public accounting experience preferred; CPA designation strongly preferred.
  • 0–2 years of relevant work experience.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Access; familiarity with Elite, report writers, and databases preferred.
  • Experience with partnership accounting, particularly equity partners’ capital and investment partnerships.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively, producing accurate and well-documented work under tight deadlines.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with all levels of personnel.
  • Proactive self-starter with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Flexible and adaptable to shifting demands and opportunities.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to plan and execute multiple related activities.

The anticipated pay range for this role is listed below and represents our good faith and reasonable estimate of the starting salary range at the time of posting. In addition, this role is eligible for a discretionary bonus based on performance. The actual offered rate for this position will be determined based on job-related, non-discriminatory factors, including qualifications and experience, geographic location, education, external market data and consideration of internal equity.

 

  • Boston: $69,500 - $100,800
